The Círculo at present
Whereas the main founders are businessmen, the Círculo has never been a business organization, as from the very beginning it has brought together professionals and economists, either from the world of business or from the world of University, and also Administration experts.
Surely enough, the dynamics of businessmen, economists, professionals and administration experts is one of the main features of this entity and it turns it into a place for dialogue and discussion among different social groups while, at the same time, it separates this entity from sectorial approaches or from approaches that defend particular interests.
The Círculo de Economía is formed by individual partners and by cooperating entities that are the main pillars of the institution. The new partners are backed by two members of the institutions and accepted without opposition by the members of the Board. The current census contains more than 1,300 partners. The cooperating entities play an active role in the activities of the Círculo, especially during the work meetings. At present there are more than 100 entities.
The fact that this is a pluralist entity in which persons of different ideologies and occupations play an active role means that, from the very beginning, it has been characterised by the independence of criteria. This has made it possible for one of the most appreciated activities, the so-called Círculo opinions, to acquire a great importance in the mass media and to be heard and taken into account as a reference point in decision-making processes by the different administrations and social agents. About 40 Opinions on Current Issues have been published by the Círculo foundation.
The Board of Directors of the Círculo de Economía is its main governing body and it is there that the criteria of the entity are defined. It is appointed by the President and, later on, ratified by the partners. The President of the Círculo de Economía is elected every three years, and he cannot be re-elected, which is an evident proof of the permanent vocation for renovation of the Círculo.
